Politcal cognitive dissonence
Oct. 25th, 2008 11:33 pmI just saw on the BBC News feed John McCain say that Barack Obama would "re-distribute wealth" which would badly impact on the middle class. This is what caused the confusion.
Now in America, as in the UK; the top 5 or 10% own or control well over 50% of the wealth, and when he says that if you earn 250,000 dollars you have to pay a bit more tax, how exactly does that hurt the middle class?
I mean, the guy married a millionaire heiress, I don't want to be called a "socialist" but given the huge tilt towards giving the rich more money and the middle and working class less these past 10 years in the US, which given that you lot never really had the safety net or free medical access we have in the UK, isn't entirely unreasonable.
I know that many of you who've added me to your flist are american democrats, but I'd like to hear your views no matter what your politics or nationality.
Cheers.

Date: 2008-10-26 06:10 am (UTC)Bush essentially helped out the people who needed tax relief least, and McCain wanting to extend the cuts to the very rich makes me furious. (And then got us into debt and two wars...) To me McCain just wants to make it all worse because it's the path we're on already. It scares the fuck out of me.
Then I go here (http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/) to cheer myself up. It's not a done deal yet, and I'm very worried about another stolen election, but it does let me sleep at night.
edited because I can't type...

Date: 2008-10-26 10:54 pm (UTC)With the exception of Sarah Palin, I would not want any of the candidates as my neighbor. And none of them, including Palin, have the authority -- moral or otherwise -- to run anyone's life but their own.
