Skeptics in the Pub
Jan. 19th, 2009 11:02 pmSo as some of you may know, I've been getting into the whole "skeptics community" thing recently, going to events, meetups, listening to podcasts such as Skeptics Guide to the Universe. So at tonights Skeptics in the Pub we had as the special guest Rebecca Watson of the SGU and her own site, Skepchic.org. She was giving a talk about womens intuition and how it's nonsense and leads women into believing other types of nonsense.
And after the talk I thanked her for coming as well as doing the SGU podcast, I also bumped into Tom Minchin, an australian singer who's written some comedic songs in this area such as the following.

Date: 2009-01-20 08:52 pm (UTC)She cited a study that was done in an american university whose name I can't remember which I think studied female and male responses to unfamiliar medical circumstances? and found that women didn't intuitively know the correct answer any more than their male counterparts and and that it was experience and education that helped solve problems and that most stories of intuition were merely anecdotal.

Yes, there's huge body of evidence to suggest that successful 'intuitive' responses (i.e. feelings of knowing the right answer without an awareness of having acquired the knowledge) are the result of unconscious learning/priming.
